It was good and different till chapter 16. After that it switches to the typical "magical academy" fanstasy. Complete with good-for-nothing super-awed teachers, good-for-nothing braggart rivals, shady scheming authority figures and, rounding of the checklist, the magical field trip that goes wrong and the mc has to flex his magical muscles.
